The Peloton Vision

Few things have fueled my success in life like networking. My transformation, in this regard, started when I began attending the Inman Connect conferences. Getting to know the people shaping the real estate industry had a powerful impact on me, and my business flourished as a result.

In one of the first events I attended, Brad Inman often spoke of his “Latte Vision”, which challenged the real estate industry to make buying or selling a home as easy as ordering a latte at Starbucks.

It was a compelling idea, bringing together, at least in words, the elements the attendees were working hard to improve, i.e., Simplify the transaction. Remove friction. Make it seamless.

A few years later, while attending Inman Connect in New York City, I was invited to a charity bike ride at the studio of a new company called Peloton—a company bringing the spin class experience into people’s homes.

This was right up my alley. Within months, I had one in my basement.

I loved everything about it. No commute to the gym. No waiting for equipment. No coordinating schedules. Just walk downstairs, clip in, and go.

This was the fall of 2018, so a full 1.5 years before the pandemic that would propel the company to crazy heights. I was working crazy hours, in addition to having two small children, and the Peloton delivered exactly what I needed: An intense workout combined with a complete mental escape, all without leaving my house.

Seven and a half years later, the company has had its share of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I have a 358-week streak because the system makes it easy to stay consistent.

Not because the workouts are easy—they aren’t. But everything around the workouts is designed to keep riders motivated, accountable, and engaged.

And so, it didn’t take long for me to think, at the end of a rigorous ride… This is exactly what real estate agents need to grow their businesses.

Some lessons I learned from Peloton that I’ve baked into Balanced Busy:

Peloton doesn’t just have good instructors. They have instructors with distinct personalities that people actually connect with. Emma’s calm encouragement. Ally’s infectious energy. Robin’s no-excuses intensity.

You find the voice that resonates with you, and suddenly a hard workout feels like spending time with someone who gets you.

Lesson for Balanced Busy: Coaching shouldn’t be generic, one-size-fits-all training. It should be valuable, personalized, and delivered in a way that actually resonates with how YOU work.

Every Peloton ride shows your output in real-time. You see exactly how hard you’re working. The leaderboard shows how you stack up against fellow riders. You can give (and receive) high-fives mid-ride.

Here’s what’s brilliant about this: You push yourself harder because others can see you. Not because someone’s yelling at you, but because there’s accountability through visibility.

Lesson for Balanced Busy: Agents need clear metrics that actually matter—not vanity numbers, but actions that lead to growth. And they need peer accountability that motivates rather than micromanages.

Peloton offers live classes with real-time energy and competition. But they also have thousands of pre-recorded rides you can take whenever it fits YOUR schedule.

6 am? Great. 10 pm after the kids are asleep? Perfect. The support is there when you need it.

Lesson for Balanced Busy: As we build the Balanced Busy community, we’re designing it to meet agents where they are. Our content has to fit into real life, real schedules, real demands.

Different class types. Different lengths (20- 90 minutes). Different music styles. Different difficulty levels.

The variety keeps it from getting boring or stale. You’re always choosing what fits your current need and energy level.

Lesson for Balanced Busy: There’s not just ONE path to business growth. Agents need multiple approaches, multiple strategies, multiple ways to move forward—not just a single playbook that may or may not fit them.

Even when you’re alone in your basement at 5:30 am, you’re riding WITH other people. You see their names on the leaderboard. You celebrate milestones together. You feel connected.

It’s team culture without mandatory meetings or micromanagement.

Lesson for Balanced Busy: Agents need to feel part of something bigger than themselves, but they don’t need another meeting. They need connection that energizes rather than drains.

Peloton tracks everything. Your total output. Your personal records. Your streaks. Your badges.

The gamification isn’t gimmicky—it’s genuinely motivating. You can SEE your improvement week over week, month over month.

Lesson for Balanced Busy: Agents need to see their progress clearly. Not just closed deals (which are lagging indicators), but the actions they’re taking TODAY that will create results TOMORROW.

The reality for most agents? The business coaching they get from their broker is often high on superlatives but low on specifics. The programs sound impressive, but when you look deeper, there’s no real substance—just motivational fluff without actionable strategy.
